Gwernaffield Silver Band

Gwernaffield Silver Band is based in the village of Gwernaffield which nestles in the hills to the west of the town of Mold in North East Wales.

The Band was formed over a century ago and the present band strives to continue the long tradition of music making in the locality.

It is a friendly band which welcomes players of all ages and experience, including learners - both young and old.

History

It is probable that the Band started as a small group of individual players, coming together to play for special events round the villages of Gwernaffield and Pantymwyn at the turn of the 1900s. There is mention in the County Herald of 1899 that the Gwernaffield Brass Band played for the annual Sunday School Treat for children of the village.

Its history during the first part of the Twentieth Century was rather chequered, with periods of activity and disbandment. However, in 1971 the present Band was formed by Harold Curran and Jim Evans, under conductor Graham Jones, with tuition for learners run as an evening class. Since 1971 and to the present day the Band has been in continuous existence and has been active in contesting and playing in concerts and other functions.

The present Band has members drawn principally from the two villages of Gwernaffield and Pantymwyn with several players travelling from further afield. In addition to the Main Band, there are two groups of learners:

Beginners, consisting of both adults and juniors

Advanced learners, currently juniors only.

The band rehearses in the Church Hall, Gwernaffield on Sunday evening from 19:00 to 21:00 and on Wednesday from 19:30 to 21:30. For directions to the Bandroom, see our "How to Find Us"
